Agile in U.S. Government

Government agencies are using SAFe to generate better results for stakeholders—including taxpayers, contractors, and military personnel. They’re learning to adopt a Lean-Agile mindset, follow DevSecOps practices, apply SAFe’s proven approaches, and lead cultural change in their organizations. You can, too, with our SAFe® for Government course.

Agile adoption in the US government is growing rapidly. Agencies such as 18F, the US Digital Service, the Government Accountability Office (GAO), and more are providing guidance on agile practices.

In fact, the 2021 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) aims to remove bureaucratic and statutory impediments to the adoption of enterprise scalability on agile programs [NDAA2021.] The Department of Homeland Security has established agile development as the preferred developmental approach for IT programs and projects.

Guidance from the Office of Management and Budget (OMB)

  • “Encourage iterative (agile) development and digitalization
  • Deliver solutions iteratively through close collaboration
  • Frequently reassess progress incrementally”

Scaling Agile in Government

More than 500 US state and federal agencies, offices, and contractors trust the Scaled Agile Framework® (SAFe®). Over 20,000 government professionals are trained in SAFe. Why? Because SAFe helps government agencies achieve their mission, and be effective stewards of taxpayer money.

The Department of Defense Agile Software Acquisition Guidebook states, “We need to develop, deliver, and evolve our defense business systems and weapon systems more efficiently and at the speed of relevance … This requires adopting and adapting modern software development methods and best practices.”

That’s why the U.S. Air Force is using SAFe to build its Future Operationally Resilient Ground Evolution (FORGE) ground space and missile system.
